Women's Tactical Pants for Hips, Waist and Length

If your hips and waist fight each other, start with the cut, then check the waistband and inseam. Propper lists relaxed hips and thighs, 5.11 lists waist adjustment, and LAPG lists Short, Regular and Long inseams. Here is what to compare before you order.

We did not try these on.

  • Measure first: waist, hips, inseam and rise.
  • Tight hips or thighs? Start with a stated relaxed cut.
  • Waist gaps? Compare adjustment and waist height.
  • Need room to bend? Check stretch and a gusset.
  • Too long or too short? Compare inseam options.
  • Want cargo pockets that zip? Check the layout.

Measure first

Measure your natural waist and the fullest part of your hips in inches. For inseam, measure from the crotch seam to the hem on pants with a length you like. Compare both waist and hip with the maker's chart before choosing a size.

For waist height, compare the front rise of pants you like with the maker's rise measurement, if published. Look for where the waistband sits as well as whether it adjusts. Try sitting, bending and squatting when you check the fit.

Open the Size Guide on the Propper Lightweight and Propper Kinetic pages, use 5.11's women's bottoms chart, open the Size Guide on the LAPG BFE page, or check Rothco's EMT chart.

Tight hips or thighs?

Propper Women's Lightweight Tactical Pant

Start here if you want a cut described around your hips and thighs. Propper states Relaxed fit - elastic waistband, relaxed hips and thighs, straight legs. Its relaxed-fit guide adds Elastic waistband sits at the waist.

Compare this cut first when your current pants fit at the waist but pull across the seat or thighs. The waistband position is also worth checking if you dislike pants sitting below your waist.

A relaxed-fit description is a starting point, rather than a measured amount of extra hip or thigh room.

Waist gaps?

5.11 Women's EMS Pant

For waist adjustment, 5.11 lists Adjustable waistband. It also lists Gusseted construction and 19 pockets. Put this on your try-on list when you want waist adjustment alongside an EMS pocket layout.

The maker does not give an adjustment range, so compare both your waist and hips with its chart.

Rothco Womens EMT Pants

For a lower waistband, Rothco specifies an expandable / stretch waistband and low waist style. It lists the inseam as 31 Inches. Compare that length with pants you already like.

Choose another cut if you want the waistband at your natural waist.

Need room to bend?

Propper Kinetic Women's Tactical Pant

For stretch fabric and a gusset, Propper lists 4% spandex in the fabric and Gusseted crotch for mobility. These are features to compare if bending and crouching are part of your day.

Check the waistband position: Propper describes a Modern fit with a curved waistband that sits below the waist.

Too long or too short?

LAPG Women's BFE 11 Pocket Stretch Tactical Cargo Pant

The inseam selector lists Short, Regular and Long. Start here if you want to compare length options within the same model. The features also include a Gusseted crotch.

A Long inseam describes leg length, rather than how high the waistband sits.

Want cargo pockets that zip?

5.11 Women's Apex Pant

For a stated closure and layout, 5.11 lists Cargo pockets with zipper closures and internal utility storage, plus Back yoke utility pockets. Compare those locations with where you want to carry your phone and tools.

The layout description gives no pocket dimensions for checking a particular phone.

Should I try a men's cut?

Community consensus: many curvy women report a better fit in men's cuts sized to the hips, with the waist taken in by a tailor. Try that route if the women's cuts keep fighting your proportions. Check the seat and thighs before having the waist altered.

Your fit questions

My hips fit, but the waist is loose. Where do I start?

Compare Propper Women's Lightweight Tactical Pant for its stated relaxed hips and thighs, then 5.11 Women's EMS Pant for its adjustable waistband. Use the waist and hip measurements in each maker's size guide to compare sizes.

I want the waistband higher. Which cut should I check?

Propper's relaxed-fit guide for the Women's Lightweight Tactical Pant says its elastic waistband sits at the waist. The Kinetic Women's Tactical Pant sits below the waist, while Rothco Womens EMT Pants have a low waist style.

What should I look at if I need a short or long inseam?

LAPG Women's BFE 11 Pocket Stretch Tactical Cargo Pant lists Short, Regular and Long inseam options. Rothco Womens EMT Pants list a 31-inch inseam. Compare these choices with the inseam of pants that already fit you.

Which pair has cargo pockets that zip shut?

5.11 Women's Apex Pant lists cargo pockets with zipper closures and internal utility storage.
